Jay-Z and Kanye West have settled a lawsuit out of court over the sampling used on a track off of Watch the Throne. The song in question is “The Joy” (featuring Curtis Mayfield), in which Jay and ‘Ye used part of Syl Johnson’s “Different Strokes” without compensation or credit.
Johnson, the blues and soul singer/producer, originally filed the lawsuit back in October in an Illinois court. Johnson also claimed that West unsuccessfully tried to use “Different Strokes” for his latest solo album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Dark Fantasy. Johnson says that West couldn’t use the song for ‘Fantasy’ then used it without compensation or credit on ‘Throne.’
